Nickel Aluminium Bronze

Nickel Aluminium Bronze is Copper alloy based material with the addition of;

  • Aluminium (Al)
  • Iron (Fe)
  • Nickel (Ni)
  • Manganese

These materials are also known as Aluminium Bronze or NAB

Common Material Specifications

Cu Al9 Fe5 Ni5

  • ASTM B148 UNS C95800
  • BS1400: AB2
  • EN1982: CC333G

Others

  • ASTM B148 UNS C95500 (10/4/2)
  • ASTM B148 UNS C95400 (11/4)
  • ASTM B148: 10 alloys in total

Typical Properties

  • Tensile 580-640 N/mm2
  • Yield 240-250 N/mm2
  • Elongation 13- 15%
  • Hardness HB140
  • Density 7.6 g/cm3
  • Good castability, reasonable bearing material, easy machining, high strength
  • P/T Ratings Shipham SPT01 19 bar for class 150
  • EN1759-3:2003 15.5 bar class 150

Corrosion Properties

  • Good for seawater service
  • Especially good for pitting corrosion, stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue
  • Good fouling resistance

Additional Uses & Comments

  • Variety of wrought specifications available, good for trim material
  • Low magnetic permeability
  • Non-sparking; can be used for oxygen service
  • Reasonable thermal and electrical conductivity
  • Good Castabilty with suitable design
  • Weldable
  • Can be heat treated to improve seawater corrosion properties

Cautions

  • Low modulus of elasticity, but good yield stress
    • Raised face flanges non-standard
  • High temperature use
    • Observe pressure ratings at higher temperatures
  • Should not be used in polluted / H2S containing seawater (in common with 316 Stainless)
